“Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”James 4:7 (KJV)

How Scripture teaches believers to stand against evil, with authority in Christ and without fear or superstition.

James gives the order, and the order is the teaching. Submit first, then resist. Resistance attempted without submission is a fight in our own strength, and Scripture never promises victory on those terms.

Two errors are common here. One denies that evil is real at all. The other sees it everywhere and lives afraid, treating spiritual warfare as a technique to be mastered. Neither matches the New Testament.

The believer's authority is given, not generated. It rests on the finished work of Christ, and it is exercised in His name and under His Lordship. That is why humility and holiness matter more than volume.

Practically: keep short accounts with God, fill your heart with Scripture, pray with other believers, and refuse fear. Christ has already won. We stand on that ground rather than fighting for it.

Key points

  • Submission comes before resistance.
  • Avoid both denial of evil and fear of it.
  • Authority is given in Christ and exercised in humility.

A prayer to close

Lord Jesus, I submit myself fully to You. In Your name I resist every work of the enemy against my life, my family, and my household. Thank You that the victory is Yours and I stand in it. Amen.
