“Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone.”James 2:17 (KJV)
Paul says not of works. James says faith without works is dead. Read together, they describe one life rather than two doctrines.
This has been argued about for centuries, often with more heat than light. The apparent conflict eases considerably once we notice that Paul and James are answering different questions.
Paul answers: how is a person made right with God? His answer is by grace through faith, not of works, so that no one can boast. James answers a different question: how do you know a professed faith is alive? His answer is that living faith produces works.
So the two are not rivals. Paul guards the root; James inspects the fruit. A tree is not made alive by its fruit, but fruit is how you know it is alive.
The practical conclusion is simple. Stop trying to earn what Christ has given, and start living like someone who has received it.
Key points
- Paul and James answer two different questions.
- Paul guards the root of salvation; James inspects its fruit.
- Rest in grace, and then live like it is true.
A prayer to close
Lord, keep me from earning what You have freely given, and from claiming a faith that shows no fruit. Let my life prove what my mouth confesses. Amen.
