New Every Morning

“It is of the LORD's mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.”Lamentations 3:22-23 (KJV)

For anyone who has failed repeatedly and wonders whether God's patience has finally run out.

These words were written in the ruins of a city, by a man watching everything he loved fall apart. That is worth remembering, because it means this promise was not written from a comfortable place.

The claim is startling. Not that mercy is large, but that it is renewed. Yesterday's supply is not what you are living on today. Every morning issues a fresh measure to those who will receive it.

This is God's answer to the person who has repented before and failed again. His compassions fail not. The failure in that sentence belongs to us, and the faithfulness belongs to Him.

Do not let shame make you a stranger to God. Come back this morning. The mercy waiting for you today has never been used.

Key points

  • Written in ruins, not in comfort.
  • Mercy is renewed daily, not rationed from yesterday.
  • Repeated failure is not a reason to stay away.

A prayer to close

Lord, Your compassions do not fail, even when I do. I receive Your mercy afresh this morning, and I ask for grace to walk differently today. Great is Your faithfulness. Amen.
